Sochat Crafting a User-First Messaging Brand

Hero

Sochat was a visionary messaging application that aimed to disrupt the established social media landscape by focusing on core user needs: security, privacy, and utility. Launched in 2015, the app introduced features like self-destructing messages, heavy encryption, offline functionality, and advanced search—features that were cutting-edge at the time. My task was to define a complete, friendly, and trustworthy brand identity and design system that would clearly communicate these advanced features and stand out against major competitors.

Market Research & Brand Refresh

The project began with market research and a competitive analysis of established messaging apps (e.g., WhatsApp, Messenger). The goal was to identify visual gaps and opportunities. The initial brand identity was deemed too generic. The solution was a refresh:

  • Color Upgrade: The primary color was shifted to a brighter, more vibrant "Monochrome Blue" to convey modernity and approachability, distinguishing it from darker competitors.
  • Typography: The typeface was updated to a bolder, more contemporary sans-serif to enhance readability and impact across all marketing materials.
  • Logo Evolution: The "Existing mark" (a swirling speech bubble) was replaced by a more direct, memorable, and human-centric "New mark"—a winking smiley face inside a speech bubble. This new logo, which includes the wordmark for the final logo lockup, is friendly, conveys communication, and suggests security (the wink).

Identity System and Logo Construction

A complete brand system was developed to ensure consistency across all touchpoints.

  • Logo Construction: Precise guidelines were established for the logo lockup, sizing, and clear space. The logo was designed to be instantly recognizable and highly scalable, looking clear and friendly even at small sizes (e.g., as an app icon or favicon).
  • Color Palette: The palette was formally defined, centering on the bright Monochrome Blue (for visibility and trust), Black (for text and bold elements), and Dark Gray (for subtle contrast and secondary information). This ensured a consistent look from the app UI to outdoor advertising.

Marketing and Feature Iconography

To clearly communicate Sochat's advanced feature set, a cohesive and memorable iconography set was created.

  • Icon Style: Icons were designed using a vibrant blue outline, sometimes highlighted with a magenta overlay for a modern, energetic, and slightly "glitchy" aesthetic.
  • Key Features Highlighted: Icons visually represented core benefits such as:
    • Self-Destruct (a bomb)
    • Search (a magnifying glass over a cloud)
    • Secure (a castle/keep)
    • Voice (sound waves)
    • Offline (a speech bubble with a 'dot dot dot')
  • These icons were prominently featured on the marketing website to clearly explain the app's advantages to new users.

Digital and Out-of-Home Marketing

The branding was applied to key promotional materials, demonstrating its versatility and impact.

  • Website Design: The landing page was designed to immediately showcase the product and its availability on the App Store and Google Play, using the bright blue to command attention. Clear calls to action were included, such as "Download Sochat and chat better."
  • Advertising Mockups: Mockups for out-of-home (OOH) advertising, such as transit advertising, were created. These leveraged the bold blue and simple, direct messaging ("Texting with benefits. Download Sochat and chat better.") to drive app downloads in high-traffic urban areas. The consistent application of the brand across all media solidified Sochat's energetic and trustworthy presence.

Outcome Summary and Impact

The full-stack design initiative resulted in a unified and highly competitive brand identity for Sochat. The clear, user-centric interface and robust branding successfully communicated the app's advanced security and utility features. The bright, friendly design aesthetic allowed Sochat to stand out in a crowded market dominated by more muted or complex brands. By streamlining the product experience and creating effective marketing collateral, the design work positioned Sochat for strong adoption and established a cohesive visual language ready for global scale.
